The direct answer: there is no single honest “after gas” number for a DoorDash driver. Start with the payouts and tips you actually received, subtract the fuel used during the shift, and you have after-gas earnings. To understand whether the shift was profitable, also subtract vehicle wear and other business costs. Keep estimated taxes as a separate planning step.
Use your own shift, not an average
DoorDash says Dasher pay can include base pay, promotions and customer tips, and that earnings vary with where, when and how often someone delivers. That variation is why a national hourly average cannot answer what your shift kept.
Use these three layers instead:
After-gas earnings = payouts + tips − fuel cost
Operating profit = payouts + tips − fuel − vehicle wear − other business costs
Planned take-home = operating profit − estimated tax set-aside
“Other business costs” may include parking, tolls and platform-related fees you paid. Vehicle wear is different from fuel: tires, maintenance and depreciation do not appear at the pump, but the miles still create a cost.
A five-minute shift calculation
- Record the final payout and tip total for the shift.
- Record all business miles, including unpaid driving that belongs to the shift.
- Calculate fuel used from your vehicle’s MPG and the fuel price you paid.
- Add maintenance, wear, tolls, parking and other documented business expenses.
- Review estimated taxes separately from operating profit.
The IRS tells gig workers to keep income records and expense receipts throughout the year. Those records support tax preparation; they also make the shift calculation more accurate.
How GigMiles handles the calculation
GigMiles lets a driver log earnings, miles and expenses, then models vehicle cost from the vehicle details and regional fuel context. It shows estimated net after vehicle costs and an estimated tax set-aside. Manual entries and the today/this-week view are part of the free core; automatic GPS tracking is a Pro feature.
