The direct answer: for an Uber Eats courier, operating profit is final delivery payouts and tips minus fuel or charging, vehicle wear, tolls, parking and other documented business expenses. Estimated taxes come after that as a separate planning layer. The balance displayed during a delivery may not be the final number because a customer can change a tip after delivery.
The profit formula
Use the final amount in your delivery statement, not an offer-screen estimate:
Operating profit = final payouts + tips − energy cost − vehicle wear − other business expenses
Then calculate two decision metrics:
Profit per hour = operating profit ÷ hours worked
Profit per mile = operating profit ÷ business miles
These answer different questions. Profit per hour shows the value of your time. Profit per mile exposes shifts that looked busy but required too much driving.
Expenses drivers often miss
- Gas or electricity used for delivery miles
- Maintenance, tires and depreciation or battery/mechanical wear
- Tolls and parking paid for business trips
- Delivery gear and other documented business expenses
- Fees shown in the final platform statement
Do not subtract a tax deduction as if it were a cash expense. A deduction can affect taxable income; it is not money spent during the shift. Also keep an estimated tax set-aside separate from operating profit, because the estimate depends on your full income, filing status, withholding, state and eligible deductions.
How GigMiles helps
GigMiles brings earnings, miles and expenses together and models vehicle cost from the driver’s vehicle and regional context. It shows estimated net after vehicle costs and an estimated tax set-aside. The free core supports manual entries and today/this-week views; Pro adds automatic GPS tracking and longer-range analysis.
Use the free gig driver net-income calculator to test a completed shift. Enter the final payout, total business miles and total working time. The result is a simplified planning estimate, so compare it with your receipts and full records.
