Quarterly Tax Estimate for Delivery Drivers

The direct answer: estimate a delivery driver’s annual net self-employment income, combine it with other income, withholding and credits, then use the current Form 1040-ES worksheet to estimate required payments. The IRS generally expects estimated payments when you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits and your withholding and credits will be less than the smaller of 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax. Exceptions and special rules apply.

Start with net profit, not app payouts

Your delivery app’s payout is gross business income. Build the estimate from records for all gig income and eligible business expenses:

Net self-employment income = business income − eligible business expenses

Then add the rest of your tax picture: wages, other income, filing status, deductions, credits and tax already withheld. This is why a flat percentage of one week’s delivery payout is only a rough savings habit, not a tax calculation.

Use the current IRS worksheet

The IRS directs individuals to Form 1040-ES for estimated tax. The form covers income tax and self-employment tax and explains the general safe-harbor tests. The IRS uses four payment periods, but due dates can move to the next business day when they fall on a weekend or legal holiday. Check the current form before paying.

Recalculate when your work changes. If your delivery income rises, falls or stops, update the annual estimate instead of repeating an outdated amount.

What GigMiles shows

GigMiles keeps earnings, mileage and expenses together and shows separate estimated self-employment, federal and state amounts. Its quarterly tracker is a planning view based on the information entered in the app. It does not file a return, make a payment or guarantee an IRS safe harbor.

Use the free gig driver net-income calculator to estimate one shift after modeled vehicle costs and a simplified self-employment-tax layer. For a quarterly payment decision, use your complete records and the current IRS worksheet or a licensed tax professional.
